In a significant move ahead of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, the Indian Railways, in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation, is elevating key railway tracks and eliminating level crossings in Prayagraj to ensure smooth and uninterrupted traffic during the world’s largest religious gathering.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 26, 2025, is expected to witness a massive influx of pilgrims from across the country and the world. In preparation for this grand event, the Railways has undertaken extensive infrastructure work to improve traffic flow and ensure public safety.
According to railway officials, 21 level crossings across Prayagraj have been identified for elimination. Of these, 15 have already been completed, with the remaining slated for completion by the end of December. These crossings are being replaced with Rail Under Bridges (RUBs) and Rail Over Bridges (ROBs) to reduce congestion and allow for the free movement of both rail and road traffic.
“This is not just about the Kumbh. These improvements will benefit the city for years to come,” said Shashi Kant Tripathi, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Central Railway. He confirmed that the initiative is progressing on schedule and will be completed before the Mela begins.
The decision to eliminate level crossings comes in response to the expected increase in train traffic. During the Maha Kumbh, over 10,000 trains, including regular and special services, will pass through the city. The upgraded infrastructure is aimed at preventing delays and ensuring the safety of both pilgrims and residents.
Meanwhile, the Railways has also issued a clarification regarding circulating rumours of free train travel during the Kumbh. In an official statement, the Ministry of Railways termed these claims as “baseless and misleading.” It stated unequivocally that no provisions exist for free travel, and passengers must carry valid tickets. Traveling without a ticket will be treated as a punishable offense, as per railway rules.
“The focus is on strengthening infrastructure, not on offering free services,” the statement read. The estimated cost of eliminating the 21 level crossings is approximately ₹450 crore, making it one of the most ambitious railway infrastructure projects undertaken in the region in recent years.
The Indian Railways’ efforts are being widely seen as a proactive step toward managing the logistical challenges of the Maha Kumbh while also laying the groundwork for long-term urban mobility in Prayagraj. With preparations nearing completion, officials are confident that this year’s Mela will be smoother, safer, and more efficient than ever before.
