In a groundbreaking step toward green transportation, Indian Railways is set to launch its first hydrogen-powered train trials in December 2024. The initial trial will take place on the 90-kilometer Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, signaling a bold move toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
A Step Toward Sustainable Rail Travel
This initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader plan to adopt eco-friendly technologies and cut dependence on fossil fuels. The hydrogen-powered train runs on hydrogen fuel cells, which generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen—emitting only water vapour. This makes it a zero-emission transport solution, aligning with India’s climate goals and green energy mission.
The Jind–Sonipat route was chosen for its moderate traffic and proximity to necessary infrastructure, allowing close monitoring of the train’s performance, efficiency, and safety features.

Additionally, partnerships with domestic and global stakeholders are being explored to build hydrogen production and storage infrastructure, aligning with India’s green hydrogen mission.
