From White to Wow: Indian Railways Introduces Sanganeri Print Blankets in AC Coaches

Indian Railways is giving train travel a colourful cultural upgrade.

The familiar plain white blankets provided in air-conditioned coaches are soon set to be replaced with vibrant Sanganeri print blankets, bringing together improved hygiene, enhanced passenger comfort, and a celebration of India’s rich textile heritage.

This initiative marks another step towards modernising railway services while supporting traditional Indian craftsmanship.

A Blend of Hygiene and Heritage

For years, passengers have raised concerns about the cleanliness of white blankets in AC coaches. Although regularly washed, repeated use often made them appear worn or unclean.

The new Sanganeri print covers offer a practical solution:

  • Fully washable and easy to maintain
  • Patterns hide stains better than plain white fabric
  • Create a fresher and more hygienic visual experience

At the same time, these intricate floral and geometric designs add warmth and colour to otherwise monotone train interiors.

Trial Run Receives Positive Feedback

The initiative was first piloted on the Jaipur–Asarwa Express, where passengers responded positively to both the comfort and aesthetic appeal of the new bedding.

Encouraged by the feedback, Indian Railways is now planning a wider rollout across AC coaches on multiple routes, signaling a larger push toward passenger-centric improvements.

Showcasing Rajasthan’s Textile Legacy

Sanganeri prints originate from Sanganer, Rajasthan, a region globally known for its hand-block printing tradition. The art form is admired for its delicate motifs, natural dyes, and meticulous craftsmanship.

By introducing these prints onboard trains, Indian Railways is:

  • Promoting traditional Indian textiles
  • Supporting local artisans
  • Aligning with the “Vocal for Local” movement

This initiative ensures that heritage crafts remain relevant in modern public spaces.

A More Meaningful Travel Experience

Beyond comfort and cleanliness, the move reflects a broader vision — transforming train journeys into experiences that feel welcoming, culturally rooted, and thoughtfully designed.

It’s a reminder that public transport can be more than just functional — it can also tell India’s story.

With Sanganeri prints adding colour to the rails, Indian Railways is turning everyday journeys into something a little more beautiful.
